I tend to do a lot of driving in the car and when I am on longer trips (15 minutes or more), I really want something “to do” in the car and generally listening to the radio just does not cut it or I get annoyed as to what is on the radio at that moment. Sometimes listening to music on my phone is enough, but more often than not, I want a book to listen to and get lost in. I recently discovered Robyn Carr as an author, and I found myself lost in this fantastic while in the car (while of course still concentrating on the road and making sure I was driving safe).
Synopsis
Meet Emma Shay. Her husband, Richard, just committed suicide, that is after he stole his client’s money to fund his and Emma’s luxurious life in New York City. The truth of the matter was that Emma had NO idea what her husband was doing; but her name has been dragged through the mud and now has been left with nothing – no money and a horrible reputation where people just assume the worst of her.
Meet Lyle, the only friend that she kept in touch with when she left her hometown of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. After everything that happened to her in New York, Lyle encourages and ultimately talked Emma into coming home.
Meet Riley, Emma’s one time best friend. The two were inseparable – like sisters really, that is until Riley slept with Emma’s boyfriend while Emma was off at college and ended up getting pregnant. The friendship was over and Emma moved as far away as possible (the other side of the country), where she met Richard.
When Emma moves home she has nothing from her former life – all she has is $9,000 in a bank account. Emma returns home and is forced to ask Riley, her one time best friend, for help.
Review
I loved the story of Emma and her life “after Richard.” Robyn Carr did a great job of allowing us to “feel” everything that Emma was going through. When Emma was beat down time and time again, you felt the same way. You were angry and frustrated with her. When she was happy and things were going well for her, you were excited about the good that had happened. Every time I got in the car, no matter how far the drive was, I wanted to turn the book on, so that I could get lost in the world of Emma Shay and the new life she was trying to build. I love that this book was not all sunshine and roses and really made you feel the ups and downs of what Emma was experiencing. This was a great book to get lost in!! This was the first book that I read by Robyn Carr and I immediately downloaded a second one to listen to once I was finished with this one. I can’t wait to read may more of Robyn’s books!!
